Room 4620 (4/F via Lifts 31-32), HKUST

Abstract:

After an experimental search spanning decades, a Higgs boson was discovered at CERN in the summer of 2012 by the ATLAS and the CMS collaborations. The discovery was achieved through the combination of several search channels, in a successful collaboration among thousands of scientists. In this talk, the speaker will describe briefly the experimental facilities involved, the main components of the discovery, and some of the techniques used to extract the Higgs signal in the four-lepton channel in ATLAS. A number of compelling physics projects for the early phase of the run II of the LHC are also discussed.

The seminar is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Seating is on a first-come first-served basis.
